One of the newest fads of eating and health kicks is bone broth.
This makes it an affordable option to make the broth! Easiest products to make bone broth out of is chicken products! Why? Well generally its one of the less sought out bone products of the animals that are sold on farms as many steer clear from feeding them to their pets.
I have two bone box options available for purchase (one large and one small) to be able to fit your lifestyle and pantry and budget. However, one of the cheapest ways to be able to offer your family a very inexpensive broth is to purchase whole chickens, roast them for dinner, and then cook the carcass down. You can get multiple meals out of this option and be able to not break the bank. We will discuss this another time, but for now we are just going to stick with how to make the broth.
First off choose a reputable source, while I would encourage you to purchase from Shults Farm, maybe you are reading this out of state- and currently we do not ship our chickens at the moment. Maybe in the future!
Second, when you get your bones, necks and feet place them all in that turkey roaster pan you use for your Shults Farm turkey. No water in the pan, pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees, you can choose to season the bones at this moment, I however wait until the next step. Roast the bones for at minimum 30-45 minutes. I think an hour would be best.
Third, once the bones are roasted place them into a large stock pot. Submerse them with water, you can add your celery, carrots, onion peels, and whatever other seasonings you like. I generally keep mine pretty plain, just chicken water and some salt and pepper. I then simmer the bones for 8-10 hours on the stovetop. You'll find that Shults Farm chicken doesn't have "film" on the top to be skimmed off. Because of cooking the bones and roasting them, you have essentially eliminated this step!
Fourth, now you can cool your broth after it has been strained. This is going to be the richest form of bone broth you have. You may refill the stock pot with water, your bones and veggies, and resimmer again. You'll find the next round might be a bit paler not as dark and gelatinous but still great for soups while the first round is great for drinking or dishes!
